Saxophonist & Educator
"Brilliant second sax lesson last night with Matthew Smith. My sax has started oozing the blues! I love it, I love it, I love it!!! What a great teacher!"
"A lesson with Matthew goes beyond tuition and learning, it is an inspiration. Matthew's teaching develops not only the skills and knowledge of how to play an instrument, in my case the clarinet, but also and more importantly, who you are and how you want to be as a musician. I have only had four lessons but already I feel transformed by his brilliant approach. This sense of inner transformation is driving me to higher standards of playing with an intense desire to want to unlearn bad technique and learn afresh new and more effective pathways."
"It is a privilege to be taught by such a fine musician; individual programmes delivered with infinite patience and encouragement."
"Just wanted to thank you again for being my best birthday present ever!!! I have absolutely loved your lessons over the past 6 weeks. They have not only given me so much pleasure musically, they have also made me feel happy."
"Having been a musician for over 20 years and played jazz, I learnt more about improvisation with Matthew than I have ever done in the past.
An inspirational tutor not only from the quality of his playing, but also his teaching methods. Positive, encouraging and hardworking in a relaxed environment."
"Thanks Matthew for the inspiration and encouragement over the last few months I have really enjoyed myself...I'm 66 and I finally know what I want to do with the rest of my life"
"A brilliant teacher, very friendly, with an amazing amount of patience. Lessons are always a pleasure, and just challenging enough to ensure development. Matthew has a wealth of knowledge, especially about jazz, and I have benefited immensely from the techniques he uses to teach improvisation. Always an encouraging, supportive, tutor and an inspirational saxophone player."
"Great teacher, always really kind and patient and really good at explaining new things, his lessons are always fun!"

"I have been learning to play saxophone for about 10 years but I have always wanted to play improvised jazz and blues. For this reason I changed tutors and have been taking lessons from Matthew from September 2013. Matthew teaches in a very professional manner providing lesson notes and objectives to promote an organised practice regime. This has inspired me to take part in several players' nights at a local jazz club. Excellent work Matthew. Thank you."
"I love my sax lessons with Matthew. In a very short space of time he's raised my abilities and confidence beyond anything I ever expected. His lessons are always challenging but realistic and achievable. His endless patience, encouragement and sense of humour make learning the saxophone fun and enjoyable. I really appreciate his flexibility in tailoring my lessons to my precise needs and interests at any given moment. For me, his lessons would be worth every penny at twice the price. My only wish is that I'd have found him much sooner!"
"As a late starter I was trying to teach myself to play the saxophone from a book. I got as far as I could and felt I needed some proper tuition; that’s when I found Matthew. I have learnt so much in the last few months and now when I play even a few notes, family members can tell what the tune is supposed to be!
I find Matthew to be very patient and takes my constant questioning about music related theory in his stride. I feel stretched mentally during my lessons, which is good as Matthew pushes me to my limits and will not let me give up.
I would, and do recommend Matthew to anyone, no matter what their level of playing. A great teacher and a genuinely nice person."
"My son has only had saxophone lessons for 4 months and he is coming on in leaps and bounds. He loves having his lessons with Matthew. He comes away from his lessons happy and can't wait to get home and practice the challenges Matthew has set him."
Mum of Jack (aged 9)
"I came to playing the saxophone late in life and, being the wrong side of seventy, was quite nervous about starting. However, Matthew has made it a very pleasant and rewarding process with his patience and encouragement. The lessons are fun, the atmosphere relaxed and, despite my best efforts to re-invent music, we always seem to make progress"
"I hadn't picked up a saxophone in a long time, but since starting lessons again I finally feel like I'm back on track and progressing quickly. I've found Matthew's professional and supportive teaching style to be excellent, and his well structured lessons are very interesting and beneficial. I would definitely recommend Matthew as a teacher."
"I find all lessons with Matthew enjoyable and I always go home feeling I have learnt something."
"I have recently had two lessons with Matthew during a time when my usual teacher was on holiday. I had given him two objectives for these sessions and both were fully met. I found his style of teaching refreshing and encouraging, the pace was relaxed with time for discussion and questions and I was given materials (hard copies & electronic) for practice. Matthew's knowledge base was supported by his playing....I will not hesitate to seek further tuition."
"I have found the teaching very sympathetic to my needs, yet setting challenges to further my developing skills - without setting targets that are beyond my capabilities...Atmosphere in the "classroom" is relaxed and amicable but still retains the tutor/pupil relationshp which I consider vital for positive development. I have left the lessons confident in what I have tried to do, and looking forward to working on the new tasks that have been set."
"Having joined Matthew's class with like minded jazz enthusiasts, most of whom are late learners like myself, I find that Matthew's teaching methods are relaxed but thorough. His tremendous knowledge of jazz and improvisation make the classes good fun as well as instructional."
"Matthew's relaxed style of tutoring engenders a feeling of confidence and makes learning great fun - the style of lesson is everything that I want I think the only problem is how quickly the time flies..."
